DEIBJ Leadership

The I School’s diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) work is led by our faculty equity advisor, our DEIBJ working group, and our DEIBJ student representatives. We also support a wide variety of initiatives, working groups, and related programs with DEIBJ components. We encourage members of our community to get involved with the initiatives that most interest them!

Faculty Equity Advisor

Each department or school at Berkeley has a faculty equity advisor who helps ensure that diversity and equity are considered in all aspects of the academic mission, with particular attention to strategic planning, faculty recruitment and retention, graduate student admission and advancement, and a climate of equity and inclusion. The School of Information faculty equity advisor is appointed by the dean. As well as working within the I School, they participate in a campuswide network to share strategies and collaborate on addressing common challenges.

DEIBJ Working Group

Since 2019, the I School has maintained a working group on DEIBJ. The group includes faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly during the regular academic year to consider and share information, develop initiatives, and make recommendations about diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice at the I School in areas such as faculty recruitment and retention, admissions, fellowships, classroom climate, and more. In 2020, the working group developed the I School’s current five-year Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan. The working group is chaired by a faculty or staff member appointed by the dean.

DEIBJ Student Representatives

Since 2020, the I School has selected one DEIBJ student representative from each of our graduate degree programs. The DEIBJ student representatives participate in the monthly DEIBJ working group meetings with faculty and staff, engage with prospective students in webinars and in-person events like orientation, and develop and work on student-led DEIBJ initiatives.
